SCA Consultation Guide

About Case Content

Each consultation case in our toolkit reflects realistic practice scenarios for practical consultations. We adapt and update our cases to present different social context & complexity. While some cases may clearly indicate the consultation's focus, others may not, keeping in line with the unpredictability of real-world practice.

Our cases represent the range of conditions commonly encountered in General Practice. Although you may face clinical areas in the exam that you haven't encountered during your training, your consulting skills and background knowledge will equip you to handle these situations effectively.

Cases Structure

Each SCA practice consultation is unique and reflects different levels of social, ethical and medical complexities. While the SCA exam presents twelve unpredictable cases, we have structured our cases so that candidates are able to select an area of focus based on their learning needs at times.

The cases are mapped to the GP curriculum, the SCA blueprint and are designed to cover a wide range of practice areas. It's important to understand that the case arrangements does not rank the value or importance of any specific area. We encourage everyone to engage purposefully with all aspects of the  GP curriculum and SCA blueprint.

Understand The Making Scheme.

The Simulated Consultation Assessment (SCA) evaluates a GP trainee’s ability to integrate and apply clinical, professional, and communication skills across various domains. These domains are designed to reflect the real-life demands of general practice and ensure that trainees are comprehensively prepared for the diverse challenges they will encounter as independent practitioner.

The assessment of these domains ensures that trainees are well-rounded practitioners who can deliver high-quality patient care, communicate effectively and empathetically, make informed, ethical, and patient-centered clinical decisions, and adapt to the evolving and diverse nature of general practice.

GP Consultation Mastery

Achieving mastery as a General Practitioner (GP) involves more than just passing exams; it requires developing a deep, practical understanding of clinical practice and honing skills that will serve throughout your career.

At SCA Prep Pro, we believe that using a structured consultation approach is key to achieving this mastery. Here’s why trainees should integrate the RCGP structured approach into both their clinical practice and exam preparation. By mastering the consultation structure, the marking scheme and domains, you'll be equipped to handle a wide range of scenarios, ensuring you're ready for both the SCA and your future role as a GP. Wishing everyone best of luck!
